Elkhorn is a census-designated place located in Monterey County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,591.


Geography

Elkhorn is located at 36°48'39" North, 121°43'7" West (36.810806, -121.718531)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 12.6 km˛ (4.9 mi˛). 12.6 km˛ (4.9 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.41% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,591 people, 523 households, and 411 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 126.4/km˛ (327.4/mi˛). There are 542 housing units at an average density of 43.1/km˛ (111.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 72.16% White, 1.01% Black or African American, 0.63% Native American, 3.83% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 18.29% from other races, and 3.96% from two or more races. 27.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 523 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.8% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.4% are non-families. 14.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.04 and the average family size is 3.34.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 28.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 103.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.5 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $70,370, and the median income for a family is $71,296. Males have a median income of $40,662 versus $36,274 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $24,999. 9.8% of the population and 4.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.7% of those under the age of 18 and 15.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
