Ellen Gilchrist (born February 20, 1935) was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She was raised on a plantation owned by her maternal grandparents. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy and studied creative writing under Eudora Welty at Millsaps College. Gilchrist has been married and divorced numerous times and has three children. Her book Victory Over Japan won the National Book Award in 1984. She lives in Fayetteville, Arkansas and Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
