She was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for The Anthropology of Turquoise Meditations on Landscape, Art & Spirit (2003), a moving and humorous exploration of growing up deprived of a swimming pool in the southwest and the draining of wildlife from the southwest. Meloy was a rare breed of writer--outrageously funny and utterly focused in her commitment to the environmental movement. She was drawn to the scrappy and mischievous, as is reflected in her Raven's Exile: A Season on the Green River. Self-destruction was another interest of hers, as she plotted out the map of her known universe plus the alarmingly flimsy protections from the remnants of the Manhattan Project in The Last Cheater's Waltz: Beauty and Violence in the Desert Southwest. Her fascination with and love of desert bighorn sheep were evident in her last book, Eating Stone: Imagination and the Loss of the Wild, which also provides glimpses of her own coming to terms with mortality.
