Ellwood City is a borough located in Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 8,688.


Geography

Ellwood City is located at 40°51'40" North, 80°17'5" West (40.860983, -80.284849)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 6.2 km˛ (2.4 mi˛). 6.1 km˛ (2.3 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.09% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,688 people, 3,716 households, and 2,393 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,433.5/km˛ (3,716.6/mi˛). There are 4,006 housing units at an average density of 661.0/km˛ (1,713.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.22% White, 0.81% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,716 households out of which 26.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% are non-families. 32.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.94.


In the borough the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 86.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.4 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $28,926, and the median income for a family is $40,758. Males have a median income of $31,703 versus $21,285 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $15,784. 12.3% of the population and 8.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.9% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Ellwood City is a borough located in Pennsylvania, 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Pittsburgh and some eight miles (13 km) south by southeast of New Castle.
In the past, Elwood City sustained many light industries such as steel-tube mills, steel-car works, building-stone and limestone quarries, foundries and machine shops, coal-mining, etc. In 1910, 2,243 people lived in Ellwood City, 3,902 lived there in 1910, and 12,329 lived there in 1940.
Despite its name, it is not actually a city at all, but a borough in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania.

In May of 1933, the Ellwood city school District issued certificates of indebtedness that until recently were unknown to the collecting public.
The sequence of events that led to Ellwood city school District's issuance of scrip began as early as April 27, 1932, when the minutes of the meeting of the Board of School Directors reported approximately $100,000 in unpaid taxes.
