Elma Center is a hamlet (and census-designated place) and located in the Town of Elma in Erie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, this community had a total population of 2,491.


Elma Center is located near the center of the town on Bowen Road.


Geography

Elma Center is located at 42°49'57" North, 78°37'60" West (42.832559, -78.633242)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 16.2 km˛ (6.2 mi˛). 16.2 km˛ (6.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,491 people, 967 households, and 731 families residing in the community. The population density is 154.1/km˛ (399.0/mi˛). There are 993 housing units at an average density of 61.4/km˛ (159.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 99.00% White, 0.04% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. 0.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 967 households out of which 27.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.2% are married couples living together, 4.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 21.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the community the population is spread out with 22.0% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 29.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.5 males.


The median income for a household in the hamlet is $54,010, and the median income for a family is $61,500. Males have a median income of $42,071 versus $30,037 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $25,877. 3.4% of the population and 2.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.1% of those under the age of 18 and 3.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
