Elmendorf is a city located in Bexar County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 664. Elmendorf is located seventeen miles southeast of San Antonio at the juncture of Farm Road 327 and the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was founded in 1885 and named after a former mayor of San Antonio. For a long time, the biggest employer was Star Clay Products.


Geography

Elmendorf is located at 29°15'41" North, 98°19'50" West (29.261357, -98.330547)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 km˛ (1.2 mi˛). 3.2 km˛ (1.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 664 people, 226 households, and 162 families residing in the city. The population density is 206.8/km˛ (537.4/mi˛). There are 266 housing units at an average density of 82.8/km˛ (215.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 65.81% White, 0.75% African American, 1.05% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 28.46% from other races, and 3.77% from two or more races. 74.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 226 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% are married couples living together, 13.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.9% are non-families. 24.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.93 and the average family size is 3.56.


In the city the population is spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $26,500, and the median income for a family is $36,875. Males have a median income of $27,109 versus $19,583 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,316. 30.2% of the population and 24.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 39.6% of those under the age of 18 and 30.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
