Eloy Alfaro

Eloy Alfaro Delgado (June 25, 1842-January 28, 1912) was president of Ecuador from 1895 to 1901 and from 1906 to 1911. Eloy Alfaro was the leader of the Ecuadorian Liberal Revolution which he fought since his youth until 1895 when the liberals took power. The revolution was fought between the liberals in the coastal city of Guayaquil and the conservatives in the Andean region. He is attributed with separating the church from the state and implementing many political and civil rights like freedom of speech, finishing the first railroad from Guyaquil to Quito, legalized divorce, built public schools, and allowed civil marriage. Quito (official name: San Francisco de Quito) is the capital city of Ecuador in northwestern South America. ...


He was killed in 1912 by rich conservatives and Indians supported by the Catholic Church in Quito. His body was mutilated and later dragged through the streets. Nonetheless, his liberal-capitalist view prevailed in many ways for many years in Ecuador. Today he is a national hero.


In a recently conducted survey by a leading television channel in Ecuador, Alfaro was named the Greatest Ecuadorean in recognition of the the changes he promoted which exist today in Ecuadorean society.

Alfaro's second term in office saw trhe institution of even more liberal reforms, most notably the official separation of Church and State, implemented as an attempt to curb the influence of the conservative Catholic clergy.
Alfaro's legacy was the inspiration for a small Ecuadorian terrorist group called "Alfaro Lives, Dammit," which was disbanded in 1988.
