Encyclopedia > Elsecar

Elsecar is a village in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England.


Present day

Elsecar has its own railway station on the Hallam and Penistone lines so it is possible to make direct journeys to Sheffield, Leeds and Huddersfield.


There is also a preserved railway - the Elsecar Steam Railway here.

The current Elsecar Railway was built by Barnsley Council to provide an added attraction to the Elsecar Heritage village.
It currently runs for 1 mile for Elsecar to Hemingfield with 1 station at Elsecar, which was built as new by Barnsley Council around 10 years ago.
Cortonwood itself is expected to be the new operational base for the Elsecar Railway, with sidings and a large shed planned.
