This article has been tagged since December 2006. Elysian Charter School (also known as ECS), is a public charter school located in Hoboken, New Jersey. It was founded in 1997 by Lydia Becker and a group of parents (the Mile Square Families), after a charter was granted in January 1997[1]. It based on the Bank Street philosophy of learning[2]. Initially, there was little structure to the school, so little that in 2001 the school's charter was almost not renewed. After nearly failing to have its charter renewed, Elysian Charter gradually began to create a structured system, but it has only succeeded in structuring itself in the last year. Principals Lydia Becker, who is reported to have referred to her students as "family", was pricipal from 1997 to 2005, and one of the school's founders. Since Elysian's charter is renewed every 4 years, it had to be renewed in 2005. During the summer of 2005, after being principal for 8 years, Lydia Becker was fired from the school for unknown reasons. Lydia didn't appreciate being fired. Melissa Landera, as the head teacher, and Joanna Weintraub, as the Director of Administration, replaced Lydia Becker as co-principals from 2005-2006. In 2006, Carol Stock became the principal.
