Elza Soares - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (510 words)
Elza Soares (Born June 23, 1937) is a Brazilian samba singer.
Born and raised in a favela in Rio de Janeiro, Soares took part in a singing contest presented by the renowned Brazilian musician Ary Barroso, and received the highest marks.
Elza Pede Passagem produced no major hit singles of the size of previous releases when originally released in Brazil; nevertheless, it is now considered a classic and representative of the "samba-soul" sound of the early 70s.

Soares is a true example of the resilience of the Brazilian race; indeed her own life story is the stuff of myth.
Born in the morro (hillside slums) of Rio and forced into marriage at 12, she was a mother of four by the age of 20 (three of her children died from malnutrition); she entered and won a radio talent competition, using the prize money to pay for the treatment of her sick son.
Just the fact that Elza could survive such harrowing times and emerge with dignity intact and her natural joie de vivre restored gives one an idea of the innate strength of this astounding woman.
