em square Originally, this term referred to a 2-dimensional rectangle whose width and height corresponded to the character width and bounding box height of a letter M in a typeface.
Over a period of time, this definition has mutated to the point where it can refer to a square whose width and height are both equal to the character width of the M, or to a square whose width is a measure of a standard full-width character, or the widest standard width of a character.
