He was born in 1980 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and raised in Richmond Hill, Ontario. At the age of three he began studying ballet and at age eight found he enjoyed the artistry of figure skating. However he continued to dance until the end of high school and graduated from Canada's National Ballet School. A year after Emanuel started figure skating he was disovered by coach Joanne Mcleod who has a background in dance. He later relocated to Burnaby, British Columbia to continue training at the B.C. Centre of Excellence with coach Mcleod, whom he credits as being his biggest support system. His ballet training and East Indian/Italian heritage have given him a unique style and look. He was the Canadian Nationals Champion in 2001, 2003, and 2004, and he won the Grand Prix Final in 2004. Emanuel won Skate Canada in 2004 and in 2005 came back from sixth place to reclaim his title.
