Encyclopedia > Embodyment

Embodyment are a Christian metal band from Arlington, Texas (USA) which formed in 1993 and were first known by the name "Supplication". They commenced as a death metal band and released 3 demos under this style, which later appeared altogether on a full-length release entitled [1993-1996], distributed by Solid State Records. Christian metal or White metal is a form of heavy metal music with explicitly Christian lyrics and themes. ...

Their debut album, "Embrace the Eternal", showed a change in style as Embodyment moved from death metal to mid-paced grindcore. "Embrace the Eternal" also featured re-makes of the songs "Golgotha" and "Religious Infamy", which were originally from their demos.

Later, due to several members leaving the band, Embodyment welcomed Sean Corbray on the album, "The Narrow Scope of Things", as permanent vocalist. This album was the band's first step away from any of the heavier metal subgenres. Instead, their sound on the album was adjusted to alternative metal with hard rock influences and was the first album to feature actual singing and some yelled vocal parts rather than any form of death vocals.

Embodyment's sound basically remained the same with the exception of a few minor tweaks and line-up changes until their last album, "Songs for the Living", which was also the only album released under XS Records. It was on this album that Embodyment chose a different style of music altogether as alternative/indie rock is definitely evident.

Embodyment later disbanded in early 2004 to the dissapointment of loyal fans.

They have worked with Solid State Records and XSRecords. Note: this article is about the Christian rock record label. ...

Embodied Cognition [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy] (6572 words)
Embodied cognition theorists view cognitivist/classicist accounts as problematic for many reasons, but they are especially concerned that these accounts result in an isolationist assumption that attempts to understand cognition by focusing almost exclusively on an organism's internal cognitive processes.
The contemporary notion of embodied cognition stands in contrast to the prevailing cognitivist stance which sees the mind as a device to manipulate symbols and is thus concerned with the formal rules and processes by which the symbols appropriately represent the world (xx).
Yet, embodied cognition theorists question the evolutionary viability of viewing cognition as passive retrieval; they maintain it is too time-consuming and unnecessary for organisms to formulate representations that completely mirror environmental features that are unrelated to the goal-directed activity the organism is currently performing.
