She had previously been a Conservative Member of Parliament for Torridge and West Devon, since 1987, and had been its vice-chairman since 1983, but defected to the Lib Dems in 1995. Nicholson is Vice President of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs and a member of the Delegation for relations with Iran. She made controversy when she said in a debate that Iran "has a more advanced form of democracy than most of her neighbours" and that "women's rights are far more developed, education is open to all and jobs, up to and including that of Vice President, are open to both genders" [1].
