Emmet County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 11,027. Its county seat is Estherville, Iowa6.

History

Emmet County was created by the Iowa Legislature in 1851. It is named for the Irish patriot Robert Emmet.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,042 km˛ (402 mi˛). 1,025 km˛ (396 mi˛) of it is land and 17 km˛ (7 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.65% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,027 people, 4,450 households, and 2,910 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km˛ (28/mi˛). There are 4,889 housing units at an average density of 5/km˛ (12/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 97.38% White, 0.24% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.25% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 4.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,450 households out of which 27.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.00% are married couples living together, 7.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.60% are non-families. 30.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.93.


In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 23.80% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 19.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.30 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $33,305, and the median income for a family is $41,296. Males have a median income of $27,495 versus $20,278 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,619. 8.20% of the population and 5.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.40% of those under the age of 18 and 9.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History of Iowa Vol 3 Emmet County (5669 words)
EMMET COUNTY, originally included in the limits of Fayette, was created by act of the Legislature in 1851 with its present boundaries and named for the Irish patriot Robert Emmet.
FREMONT COUNTY lies in the extreme southwest corner of the State and is bounded on the south by Missouri and on the west by the Missouri River.
The county is traversed by the south and middle branches of the Raccoon River and its surface is for the most part rolling with a good supply of native timber.
