After graduating from Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University) in 1965, Gowin attended the Rhode Island School of Design. Career

Gowin first gained attention with his intimate portraits of his wife and family. His almost exclusive use of a large format camera led to both optical and darkroom experiments. Using a 4x5 lens with an 8x10 camera allowed Gowin to expose the full image circle, surrounded by a dramtic vignette, in his family portraits and rural landscapes. Large format describes photographic films, view cameras (including pinhole cameras) and processes that use a film or digital sensor the size of 6 x 9 cm or larger. ... Emmet Gowin was born in Danville, Virginia, a place that inspired his first photographs.
As Gowin was not able to photograph this natural disaster from the ground, he received permission to fly over it and from that moment, he became fascinated with aerial photographs.
Gowin notes "When I look at the American landscape, I…feel with great sadness that we did this to ourselves." These astounding yet deeply shocking images were taken in various states throughout the mid-west, such as Nevada, and other areas such as Czechoslovakia, Japan, and Kuwait.
