Emperor Tang Ai di (唐哀帝李祝 892-908), born Li Zhu, was the last emperor of the Tang dynasty of China. He reigned from 904 to 907. Ai di was the son of Zhaozong emperor. Ai di ascended the throne at the age of 13 after his father, the Zhaozong emperor was murdered by Zhu Wen in 904. Under Zhu Wen's regency, Ai di was all but a puppet emperor. In 907, seeing the timing was ripe, Zhu Wen executed all the remaining handful of ministers still loyal to the imperial Li family and forced Ai di to abdicate in favour of Zhu Wen. Ai di himself was demoted to Ji Yin Wang (a prince) whilst Zhu Wen proclaimed the Later Liang Dynasty thus ending 290 years of rule by the Tang dynasty. The T'ang empire reached its military apogee during the reign of Empress Wu; when she was deposed in 705, the empire soon fell into a series of court schemes and intrigues which severely weakened the central government.
The T'ang dynasty is known as the "golden age" of Chinese culture, and the bulk of the cultural flowering of this age was concentrated in the reign of Hsuan-tsung and confined to his magnificent capital, Chang-an.
The cultural flowering of the T'ang, especially during the reign of Hsuan-tsung, was characterized by the fusion of several arts and the fecund intermingling of Chinese culture with an infinity of foreign cultures, religions, and arts.
