Emperor Lizong (1205 - 1264) was the fourteen emperor of the Song Dynasty of China, and the fifth emperor of the Southern Song. His personal name was Zhao Yun. He reigned from 1224 to 1264. Lizong's long reign of 40 years did little to improve the predicament Song China was in at the time. Lizong was disinterested in governmental affairs and he delegated matters into the hands of the prime minister Ding Da quan. Notable events during Lizong's reign included the demise of the Jin dynasty in 1234 that was obliterated by the joint forces of the Mongols and the Southern Song dynasty. However in 1259, the Mongols turned aganist the Southern Song and the Song was forced to capitulate and ceded all the territories north of the Yangtze River to the Mongols. Emperor Duzong 宋度宗 (1240 - 1274) was the 15th emperor of the Song Dynasty of China, and the sixth emperor of the Southern Song.
Duzong's reign was plagued with rebellions, warfares and upheaval.
The Mongols have spent decades harassing the borders of the Southern Song and was on the verge of conquering the whole of China.

During the Song Dynasty, there were many threats from the northern borders by the Khitans (契丹) from the Liao Dynasty (遼国), Tanguts from the Western Xia (西夏) Dynasty, and the Jurchens (女真) from the Jin dynasty (金国).
The reason was that Qinzong, the last emperor of the Northern Song was living in Jin-imposed exile in Manchuria and had a good chance of being recalled to the throne should the Jin Dynasty be destroyed.
Emperor Wányán Liàng failed in taking the Song and was assassinated by his own generals in December of 1161.
