Emperor Ninmyō (仁明天皇, Ninmyō-tennō) (810March 21, 850) was the 54th imperial ruler of Japan. He reigned from 833 to March 21, 850. His birth in name was Prince Masara (正良親王, Masara-shinnō). He ascended to the throne following the abdication of his uncle, the Emperor Junna. First he made a son of Junna the crown prince. Nine years later in 842 after a coup d'état that crown prince was replaced with Ninmyō's first son, Prince Michiyasu later the Emperor Montoku whose mother was the Empress Fujiwara no Junshi, a daughter of Fujiwara no Fuyutsugu. It is supposed there was a political intrigue planned by Ninmyō and Fujiwara no Yoshifusa, the second son of Fuyutsugu and uncle of the new crown prince.
