Emperor Ruizong 唐睿宗, born Li Dan 李旦(662-716), was the fifth and ninth emperor of Tang Dynasty. He was the eighth son of Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu. He first became emperor in 684, but he was under control of his mother, Empress Wu and didn't have any real power indeed. He was overthrown by his mother in order to make her empress in 690. In 705, Wu died, his brother Zhongzong became emperor. In 710, Zhongzong was poisoned to death, he and his son, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang engineered a coup d'etat and overthrown Emperor Shao and he became emperor for the second time.
