Dr. John S. Niles MSM (2006-2007) President of the Empire Club of Canada


Dr. John Niles is a graduate of Confederation College, Lakehead University, St. Andrew's College and Knox College, received degrees in Social Work, Theology and Psychology. After years working in the field of social work, Dr. Niles was ordained a minister in the United Church of Canada where he is serving as Senior Minister at St. Andrew's United Church Markham.


Dr. Niles, along with his wife, have cared for well over 1000 abandoned, abused, 'crack' and heroin addicted infants and toddlers over the last 20 years as a primary emergency home for Toronto CAS. For their work Dr. Niles and Mrs. Niles have received the Governor General's Meritorious Service Medal, the Heart and Spirit Humanitarian of the Year award and the Empire Club of Canada's Humanitarian Community Service Award. They have been nominated for the Order of Ontario, and the Order of Canada.


As a Child Protection Advocate, Dr. Niles has worked to better the lives of abused and abandoned children. He has spoken on radio, television, written books and articles as a outspoken advocate for change of child welfare and as an advocate for adoption. He has appeared on CBC Radio, City TV and TVO. Various articles have been written about their work in the Toronto Star, Toronto Sun and in the Globe and Mail, as well as a feature article in the United Church Observer Magazine.


Dr. Niles recounts, as an author, the lessons he has learned from his work in his book, "How I Became Father to 1000 Children and the Lessons Learned" and "No Ordinary Moments". He has started a not for profit organization called 'Kits for Kids" that provides personal products, sleepers, diapers, and toys to children from the ages of birth to 16 who come into the care of Children's Aid through the night duty emergency homes.
