The song is 2 minutes and 8 seconds in length and features a long introductory section. Around 48 seconds into the song, the tone changes, and the piece becomes slightly louder. After another 26 seconds, a hidden message can be heard within the track. Immediately after, the lyrical portion commences. On a burned copy, the song ends abruptly, (on the studio version it blends without a gap) as the last word of the song, "wall" isn't completed until the beginning of next track, "Young Lust", For this reason, they are often played together on the radio (and sometimes are incorrectly referred to as just "Young Lust"). Plot

As with the other songs on The Wall, "Empty Spaces" tells a portion of the story of "Pink", the album's protagonist. Pink is now grown up and married, but he and his wife are having relationship problems because of his distance as a result of his halfway built wall.

Hidden message

Directly before the lyrical section, there is a hidden message. It is isolated on the left channel of the song. When heard normally, it appears to be nonsense. If played backwards, the following can be heard: [1]

-Hello, hunter(s)... Congratulations. You've just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont...
-Roger! Carolyn's on the phone!
-Okay.

It is believed that this backward message is a comical reference to former lead singer/guitarist Syd Barrett. Roger Waters congratulates you for finding this message, and jokes that you can send your answer to Syd (the 'Old Pink'), who lives somewhere in Chalfont (the 'funny farm' in Chalfont). Before he can tell the exact location however, he gets interrupted by someone (engineer James Guthrie) in the background who says Carolyn (Waters' wife) is on the phone. A backward message (also known as backward masking or backmasking) is a supposed subliminal message hidden in an audio recording that is only fully apparent when played backwards. ... Empty Spaces (1437 words)
Yet by this reading, Pink's inquiry concerning the empty spaces "where we used to talk" is more ironical than truly sincere for Pink is depicted as being highly uncommunicative in the preceding scenes of the movie.
This forces the reader to step back from the narrative and realize that there is more than story going on here; there is the sheer artistry of the author as well as the multiple levels he or she has instilled in the piece of art.
The hidden message in "Empty Spaces" has the very same effect, forcing the listener away from the narrative for a moment and reminding him or her that this is just a piece of art, not a slice of life.
Empty spaces and empty libraries - Opinions (744 words)
What I found was an impressive space, full of mostly working computers, clean desks, oddly-shaped but comfortable chairs and a pleasant, well-lit work area.
Let me first say that I am deeply indebted to Susan and Richard Friedman for their generous donation, and I honestly believe it is a great service to the Brown community.
Instead it is now only a work area, and one which, in the opinions of many I've spoken with, has too much wasted space and too few tables and carrels, especially compared to its older permutation.
