Encinal High is very ethnically diverse, with a population which is 27.8% African-American, 20.2% White, 18.9% Asian, 15.7% Filipino, 14.7% Hispanic or Latino, 0.9% American Indian or Alaskan Native, 0.8% Pacific Islander, and 1.0% Multiple Ethnicity or No Response, according to the 2003-2004 School Accountability Report Card.


College and Work Preparation

  • 40-59% of graduates go to 2-year colleges.
  • 20-39% of graduates go to 4-year colleges.

  • Encinal offers 13 AP courses: Art, Biology, Calculus, Computer Science, Economics, English Composition, English Literature, Environmental Science, European History, French, Government, Spanish, and Statistics.

In addition, the school has an award winning marching band and a nationally recognized JROTC program.


In addition, Encinal High School possesses an extremely rich Dramatic Arts program. The Encinal Drama department has in past years has performed critically renowned productions of such classics as Les Miserables, Hamlet, and the Sound of Music. In 2006 Encinal High will be performing Cats, becoming one of the very first non- Broadway groups to perform the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic. This show will be directed by Bob Moorhead, Encinal's Drama Department Director.


Miscellaneous

  • The school's mascot is a Marine A-4 Skyhawk fighter plane, a tribute to the town's military heritage and to the now-decommissioned Naval Air Base on the West end of Alameda island.
  • Most students come from Chipman Middle School or Wood Middle School.
