The endocannabinoid system (also endogenous cannabinoid system) consists of two transmembrane cannabinoid receptors, endogenous cannabinoids, a transporter protein (anandamide transporter), and the metabolic enzymes inactivating the endocannabinoids (MGL and FAAH). The CB1 receptors are present in many central and peripheral sites involved in the control of homeostasis [1]. CB2 receptors are primarily expressed in peripheral and immune tissues. The main endogenous cannabinoids are anandamide and 2-arachidonylglycerol. The Endogenous cannabinoid system affect a large number of physiologic processes including: feeding behavior, pain perception, motor control, memory and learning, immune and inflammatory responses, neuroprotection and intraocular pressure [1]. Transmembrane receptors are integral membrane proteins, which reside and operate typically within a cells plasma membrane, but also in the membranes of some subcellular compartments and organelles. ... The further evidence for the participation of the endocannabinoid system in alcohol drinking behavior is derived from the observed differences in CB1 receptor function in two genetic strains of alcohol-preferring C57BL/6 and alcohol-avoiding DBA/2 mice.
Thus genetically determined differences in the activities of distinct components of the endocannabinoid system under basal conditions or in response to alcohol exposure may exist between alcohol-preferring and alcohol-avoiding animals and may be partially responsible for the differences in their voluntary alcohol intake.
