Systems Ecology is a transdiscipline which studies ecological systems, or ecosystems. ... The term Emergy Synthesis was introduced by Dr. D.M. Scienceman, the author of the Emergy nomenclature. ... Emergy means both energy memory and embodied energy. ... There appear to be a number of different understandings of the term Embodied Energy. Basically it refers to quantitative methods of accounting for flows of energy through our environment. ... The idea of a universal language is at least as old as the Biblical story of Babel and its fall â the mythical point of which is that there was once a time of a universal Adamic language (and then something happened, analogous to the Fall of Man). ... Gottfried Leibniz Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz (July 1, 1646 in Leipzig - November 14, 1716 in Hannover) was a German philosopher, scientist, mathematician, diplomat, librarian, and lawyer of Sorb descent. ... The Characteristica Universalis or Universal Character was the peak of Gottfried Leibnizs Enlightenment project. ... The Principles of Energetics can be thought of as a broad overarching expression of the many different laws uncovered in all branches of science; mechanics, biology, kinetics, electronics and theromodynamics are examples. ...

According to the Emergy Systems school, "Emergy is a systems concept that is context driven, and cannot be fully understood or utilized outside of systems context." In the context of environmental accounting, H.T.Odum (1996) defined emergy as,
With the aim of providing greater clarification of the concept it may be said, that the inclusion of the term energy memory in the definition of the word emergy implies that the properties of physical-biological-chemical materials can be included within the domain of the emergy schema.
As it is used by Scienceman, the term "energy memory" appears to have a connection with the physiological application of the cybernetic concept of "error" which is sometimes referred to as "memory".
Synthesis in this sense, is, to paraphrase the emergy systems school, 'the act of combining elements into coherent wholes rather than dissecting and breakings systems apart'.
Through the act of combining emerged new concepts and methods used for energy-based evaluations of human and environmental systems, and new corrolaries to the principles of energetics.
It also has very strong connections with Systems Ecology (also known as 'field physiology'), which might be considered it's parent, and the study of Gaia, or the noosphere.
