Boundaries

The seat covers eight of the 21 council wards in the Borough of Enfield.

The wards of Palmers Green and Bowes have Labour majorities (in general the regions to the South and East of the constituency). The wards of Grange, Winchmore Hill, Highlands, Cockfosters and to lesser extent Southgate Green and Southgate have Conservative majorities, being the district's more affluent areas. Strongly Conservative Grange Park ward has been moved to Enfield North, however, replaced by new voting districts in strong Labour voting districts. As such, Enfield Southgate remains an extremely marginal seat that will be hotly contested at the next general election.

History

Prior to the 1983 general election, this constituency was known as Southgate. The UK general election, 1983 was held on June 9, 1983 and gave the Conservatives and Margaret Thatcher the most decisive election victory since that of Labour in 1945. ...

Enfield Southgate had always been regarded as a safeConservative seat, up until 1997.

It gained especial attention in the 1997 general election when the Secretary of State for Defence Michael Portillo was unexpectedly defeated on a massive swing. Portillo had been widely expected to contest the Conservative leadership and his defeat was taken by many to epitomise the Labour party landslide victory. The victorious candidate, Stephen Twigg, increased his majority at the following election and began to rise through the ministerial ranks. The UK general election, 1997 was held on 1 May 1997. ... Tony Blair William Hague Charles Kennedy The UK general election, 2001 was held on 7 June 2001 and was dubbed the quiet landslide by the media. ...

However in the 2005 general election Twigg's majority was the largest overturned by a swing of 8.7% to the Conservatives. The minister paid dearly for his support of the Irak War, with the increased vote of the anti-war Liberal Democrat Party equivalent to the majority of the new Conservative MP, David Burrowes, whose total was far below what previous Conservative candidates had achieved, a reflection of the constituency's changing demographics as well as Mr. Burrrowes' profile in 2005 as a member of the very right wing Cornerstone faction and founder of the Conservative Christian Fellowship. It has been suggested that Marginal constituencies in the United Kingdom be merged into this article or section. ...
