Engineering colleges generally refer to colleges( institute of higher education ) where engineering course is offered at degree (under graduate )level.The students learn engineering ,the duration of course may be four to five years depending upon the university to which the college is affilated.The students learn little of basic science ( pure science ) and more of its applications to real life problems in an engineering course.. Some of these colleges may offer higher education course like Post graduate ( Graduate ) and Research ( Phd ).The engineering colleges may offer degree course in different branches ( specialisation ) like Electrical engineering ,Civil and Mechanical.The popularity of engineering colleges is surging especially in third world countries like India.The popularity may be due to high demand of Engineers in Information Technology ( IT ) sector.There has been debate ,how engineering course has stopped bright students from entering pure science field.

Bengal Engineering College - definition of Bengal Engineering College in Encyclopedia (332 words)
It was formally established as Civil Engineering College, Calcutta, way back in 1856 with the idea of introducing engineering education in the country.
Initially known as Bishop's College, Bengal Engineering College came to be known as Calcutta Civil Engineering College from 24th November, 1856, when there were only 10 students and a few instructive staff.
