ESW's vision is a world in which all people enjoy the basic resources to pursue healthy,productive lives, in harmony with each other, and with our earth. In pursuit of this vision, ESW's mission is to mobilize engineers through education, training, and practical action - building collaborative partnerships to meet the needs of current and future generations.

What makes ESW different from similar organizations such as Engineers Without Borders is that it addresses problems in both developing and developed communities. They have a truly global approach - focusing on increasing sustainable access to basic resources for those who are living in poverty, as well as finding more sustainable ways of living to address the challenge of over-consumption, often prevalent in developed nations. They believe in building a better world where all of humanity can lead healthy, productive lives, and live in balance with our earth.

Programs and initiatives include Sustainable Development, advancement of sustainability in engineering higher education, and outreach programs to familiarize engineers with sustainability issues.

The majority of their membership is comprised of undergraduate and graduate students at universities across the country. Collegiate chapters include Stanford, Berkeley, Penn State, Cornell, Northwestern, and many others. Chapters, along with their faculty advisors, organize domestic and international projects, initiate sustainability courses, and hold events throughout the year. Each year ESW also hosts a national conference at one of its collegiate chapter campuses.

Since its founding in 2002, the organization has grown exponentially, starting at a network of 150, mostly in the Cornell University community, growing to a network of over 3,000 nationwide.

It was formerly known as Engineers Without Frontiers USA (EWF-USA).
