Encyclopedia > English Division Three

Until the 2004/05 season, the Football League Third Division was the third-highest division of The Football League and the fourth-highest division in the overall English football league system. Before that it was the third division overall, but that ended with the creation of the FA Premier League prior to the start of the 1992/93 season.

The Third Division was replaced by Football League Two prior to the start of the 2004/05 season.

Overview

Prior to the formation of the Premiership in 1992, the Third Division was the third highest level in English football. Up until this time, teams were relegated to what was called the Fourth Division.

The third and fourth divisions were only formed in 1958, with the merger of Third Division North and Third Division South. Instead of being divided by regional location, the teams at this level became divided by ability.

At the end of each season the top three teams were promoted to Second Division, along with the winners of a play-off between the next four teams. Also, the bottom two teams were relegated to the Football Conference.

Note: A team could be spared from relegation if one or both of the Conference teams nominated for promotion did not fulfil the required criteria for entering the League.

Plymouth Argyle hold the record points total for this division. In their 2001/02 championship season they amassed 102 points.

Isthmian League Second Division - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (257 words)
Division Two was formed in 1973 as the first major expansion of the Isthmian League, and consisted of 16 clubs, mostly from the Athenian League.
In 1977, the two existing divisions were renamed Premier Division and Division One, and another 17 clubs were admitted (again mostly from the Athenian) to a new Division Two.
These were reorganised again into Division Two and Division Three in 1991, and in 2002 Divisions One and Two were combined into Division One North and South, and Division Three was renamed as Division Two.
Football League Fourth Division - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (233 words)
The Football League Fourth Division or Division Four of The Football League was the fourth-highest division in the English football league system from the 1958-59 season until the creation of the FA Premier League prior to the 1992-93 season.
Prior to the formation of the Premiership in 1992, the four best teams would be promoted to the Third Division and one team may have been relegated to the Football Conference.
The Fourth Division was created in 1958 so that Third Division North and Third Division South could be merged, with the 12 best teams of each league going into the Third Division and the rest being put into the Fourth.
