Ensign Records was started in 1976 by Nigel Grainge and Chris Hill as an independent Phonogram subsidiary. Ensign had its first hit with The Boomtown Rats in 1977. In 1983 Grainge sold The Boomtown Rats to Phonogram to get its complete freedom. In 1984 Grainge decided to sell his label to Chrysalis Records. When EMI purchased Chrysalis in 1991, Grainge decided to leave his record label. The Boomtown Rats (1975-1984) were a punk rock/new wave group headed by Bob Geldof who was later known for organizing charity rock concerts such as Band Aid (intended to help famine victims in Ethiopia), Live Aid, and Hands Across America (intended to help homeless people in America). ... Today Ensign remains a largly unused part of the EMI Chrysalis division.
They've recorded many records and have appeared on many compilations as well as having done national and international tours with friends such as Sick of it All, Good Riddance, Eyelid, AFI, Kill Your Idols, Adamantium, and Stretch Armstrong, just to name a few.
The Direction record came out in the winter of that year and it really helped to establish them as a band to take notice of.
Ensign signed with Nitro Records that year and released two records with them.
