Encyclopedia > Enterprise Generation Language

EGL is also an abbreviation for Elegant Gothic Lolita.

Enterprise Generation Language, or EGL, is a 4th generation language initially developed in the 1980s. IBM created EGL to help procedural programmers, particularly those with RPG and COBOL experience, learn the concepts and practices of object-oriented programming more easily.

EGL is perhaps best known as a feature within IBM's WebSphere Studio Enterprise Developer, the mainframe-oriented toolset based on the Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.org) open source workbench.

Natural Language Generation (658 words)
The study of human language generation is a multidisciplinary enterprise, requiring expertise in areas of linguistics, psychology, engineering and computer science.
Natural language generation often is characterized as a process that has to start from the communicative goals of the writer or speaker and needs to employ some sort of planning to progressively convert them into written or spoken words.
In this view, the general aims of the language producer are refined into goals that are increasingly linguistic in nature, culminating in low-level goals to produce particular words.
Next Generation Manufacturing Enterprise Model (4836 words)
Enterprises and corporations in the 20th century, whether based on functional, divisional or matrix models, resembled a pyramid with several layers.
The enterprise adaptation process will be the prime means by which companies develop and improve their adaptive (agile) capabilities, and will take on the role of systematically designing and redesigning the enterprise to cope with the increasing levels of change, uncertainty and unpredictability in the business environment.
What is more, the generic description, because it goes down to the level of fundamental principles and root issues and assumptions, is not subject to the problem of differing interpretations which is a major difficulty with buzzwords like virtual enterprise, mass customization and the like.
