An environmental disaster is a disaster that may be due to a natural event or due to human activity.

Environmental agencies are usually responsible for establishing and enforcing environmental standards, and these agencies normally do not have the authority to effect evacuations, rescue, crowd control or other emergency services that may come into play in large-scale events even if the event at hand may be described by some observers as an environmental disaster.
