Life

Eoin Colfer grew up in Wexford, Ireland, along with his four brothers, Paul, Eamon, Donal, and Niall. He first developed a passion for writing in primary school, reading Viking books inspired by his history lessons at the time. His father was a primary school teacher, and as an artist and historian. His mother was a drama teacher. In 1986, Colfer became a Primary School teacher, but continued to write in his free time. Wexford (Irish: Loch Garman) is the county town of County Wexford in the Republic of Ireland. ...


After leaving school he got his degree from Dublin University and qualified as a primary school teacher, returning to work in Wexford. He married in 1991 and he and his wife spent about 4 years working in Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Italy. His first book, Benny and Omar, was published in 1998, based on his experiences in Tunisia. It has since been translated into many languages. In 2001 the first Artemis Fowl book was published and he was able to resign from teaching and concentrate fully on writing. He now lives in Ireland with his wife and 2 children. Colfer's basis for the new detective novel seems to be a combination of childhood adoration for the Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators series and the adventures he shared with his five brothers.
Although Colfer's books are for readers 10 and up, his inspiration comes from a younger audience—his two sons Sean and Finn, 3 and 8, respectively.
In addition to Colfer's own writings, a comic book series featuring Artemis Fowl will be hitting bookstores in early 2007 and filming for a movie on the same subject is expected to begin later this year.
