There were two characters named Epeius in Greek mythology.

  1. One was a Greek soldier during the Trojan War. He built the Trojan Horse. He also founded Pisa and Metapontum. (Virgil II, 264)
  2. Son of King Endymion of Elis. He challenged his brothers to a race and beat them, winning his father's kingdom.

That night, no guards were posted - there was no need, now that the war was done - and while the Trojans slept, Epeus opened the secret trapdoor and let his companions down on ropes.
They took possession of the gates and guard-posts, Helen lit a beacon to summon back the Greeks waiting at Tenedos, and the Trojans awoke to find their city swarming with armed men.
