The Epiphany Cathedral in Moscow (1835-45)

The Epiphany Cathedral at Elokhovo, Moscow is the vicarial church of the Moscow Patriarchs.

The original church at the village of Elokhovo near Moscow was built in 1722-31 for the tsaritsa Praskovia Ivanovna. It was there that Alexander Pushkin was baptised in 1799. The present structure was erected in 1835-45 to a Neoclassical design by Eugraph Tyurin. The architecture is typical for the late Empire style. Notorious opulence of interior decoration is due to a restoration undertaken in 1912. Upon destruction of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in the 1930s, the chair of Moscow patriarchs was moved to Elokhovo, as it was the only church in Moscow roomy enough to allocate large crowds of people. Several 20th-century patriarchs have been buried there.
