The Episcopal Diocese of Delaware is one of 108 Dioceses making up the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. It consists of 38 congregations or Parishes in an area the same as the State of Delaware. The Diocese is led by a bishop and staff and provides episcopal supervision and some administrative assistance for its parishes. The arms of the Episcopal Church are based on the Cross of St George, a symbol of England (mother of world Anglicanism), with a saltire reminiscent of the Cross of St Andrew in the canton in reference to the historical origins of the American episcopate in the Scottish Episcopal Church. ... History

The Episcopal Diocese of Delaware dates its foundation to 1785, the first time a delegation was sent representing the diocese to the General Convention. The Rev. Charles Wharton, a converted Roman Catholic priest, presided over the first state convention on September 26, 1786, at which it was decided to form a wholly separate diocese from that of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania or the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, but under the episcopal supervision of the Bishop of Pennsylvania. With the loss of their lands on the Delaware River and the destruction of the Minqua by the Iroquois of the Five Nations in the 1670's, the remnants of the Lenape left the region and moved over the Alleghany Mountains by the mid 18th century.

The Episcopal Church was formally separated from the Church of England in 1789 so that clergy would not be required to accept the supremacy of the British monarch.
Groups of dioceses constitute provinces, but unlike in other Anglican Churches, the provinces of the Episcopal Church do not have an archbishop with jurisdiction over the other bishops in his or her province.
