Epping and Ongar Rural District was a rural district in the county of Essex, England. It was created in 1955 by the merger of the disbanded Ongar Rural District and most of the disbanded Epping Rural District, except the civil parishes of Great Parndon, Harlow, Latton, Little Parndon and Netteswell, which were largely transferred to the newly created Harlow Urban District at the same time. It was administered from Epping.
Since April 1, 1974 it has formed part of the District of Epping Forest, except for the civil parishes of Blackmore, Doddinghurst, Kelvedon Hatch, Navestock and Stondon, which became part of the Borough of Brentwood.
At the time of its dissolution it consisted of the following 29 civil parishes.
The Braintree District was formed by the amalgamation of the Braintree and Bocking Urban District, the Halstead Urban District, the Witham Urban District, the Braintree RuralDistrict and the Halstead RuralDistrict.
The Borough of Brentwood was formed by the amalgamation of the Brentwood Urban District and the parishes of Ingatestone and Fryering and Mountnessing from the Chelmsford RuralDistrict and the parishes of Blackmore, Doddinghurst, Kelvedon Hatch, Navestock and Stondon Massey from the Epping and OngarRuralDistrict.
The Tendring District was formed by the amalgamation of the Borough of Harwich, the Brightlingsea Urban District, the Clacton Urban District, the Frinton and Walton Urban District and the Tendring RuralDistrict.
The district was formed on 1 April1974 by the merger of Chigwell Urban District, Epping Urban District and Waltham Holy Cross Urban District, along with most of Epping and OngarRuralDistrict.
From the junction the town of Loughton and the village of Buckhurst Hill are south west, Chigwell is south east, Epping and Waltham Abbey north west, and Ongar north east.
As of 2006, the members of parliament for the district are Eleanor Laing (Conservative) for the Epping Forest constituency, whilst Eric Pickles (Conservative) sits for the Brentwood and Ongar constituency, covering the east of the district, and the area around Nazeing lies in the Harlow constituency represented by Bill Rammell (Labour).
