Encyclopedia > Equilibrium length

Equilibrium length: For a specific excitation condition, the length of multimode optical fiber necessary to attain equilibrium mode distribution.

Note: Equilibrium length is sometimes used to refer to the longest such length, as would result from a worst-case, but undefined, excitation. Synonyms equilibrium coupling length, equilibrium mode distribution length.

Lab M5: Hooke’s Law and the Simple Harmonic Oscillator (1308 words)
The displacement of the mass is (+) and the spring force is to the left (-).
Simple harmonic motion occurs whenever there is a restoring force which is proportional to the displacement from equilibrium, as is the case here.
When the mass is hung from the spring, the spring is stretched from its equilibrium length by the gravitational force on the mass, mg, which we call the weight.
