The British Actors' Equity Association (now called Equity) is the British actors' trade union. It was formed in 1930 by a group of West End performers. The users of the union have the greatest range of union fees of any union in Britain.
It is one of the hardest unions to join. Every paid British professional actor should be a member of this union. The reason for placing 'paid' on this is that an unpaid professional (an unpaid actor/crew member in professional production) is different from a paid professional. To further complicate things, you may also be an paid amateur (i.e. involved in a profit-share). Thus, British Equity is the British counterpart of both the American Actors' Equity Association and the Screen Actors Guild.
It is the counterpart in equity of the judgment in a court of law, although in those jurisdictions where law and equity have merged, judgment is sometimes used to include both.
Even in those states where law and equity remain unmerged, they are often handled by two sides of the same court, with relatively simple provisions for the transfer of a case that is brought on the wrong side.
When equity may and should be brought into play, press not the utmost rigour of the law against the guilty; for the reputation of the stern judge stands not higher than that of the compassionate.
The rules of equity arose in England when the strict limitations of common law would not solve all problems, so the King set up courts of chancery (equity) to provide remedies through the royal power.
Most eastern states had courts of equity or chancery separate from courts of law, and others had parallel systems of law and equity with different procedural rules.
Now most states combine law and equity and treat both under "one cause of action." 2) the net value of real property, determined by subtracting the amount of unpaid debts secured by (against) the property from the appraised value of the property.
