The prominence of the township as a manufacturing centre is due to ErastusBrighamBigelow (1814-1879), one of the incorporators of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who devised power-looms for the weaving of a variety of figured fabrics, - coach-lace, counterpanes, ginghams, silkbrocatel, tapestry carpeting, ingrain and Brussels carpets, - and revolutionized their manufacture.
In 1843 he and his brother Horatio N. Bigelow established in Clinton the Lancaster Mills for the manufacture of ginghams.
From 1845 to 1851 he perfected his loom for the weaving of Brussels and Wilton carpets, the greatest of his inventions; and he established the Bigelow Carpet Mills here.

Bigelow prepared a scheme of uniform taxation throughout the United States by means of stamps, and he published "The Tariff question, considered in regard to the Policy of England and the Interests of the United States" (Boston, 1863).
Bigelow was elected a member of the Boston Historical Society in April 1864, and in 1869 presented to that society six large volumes entitled "Inventions of ErastusBrighamBigelow patented in England from 1837 to 1868," in which were gathered the printed specifications of eighteen patents granted to him in England.
