Erftstadt is a city comprised of several small villages in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis, Germany, near Cologne. It was created in 1969 when the city Lechenich was merged with several surrounding municipalities. The name of the city derives from the river which flows through it, the Erft. Population: 51,939 (2003), geographical location 6° 46' East, 50° 48' North. The city covers an area of approximately 120 km², of which 70% are agricultural land, and only 10% are urban area.
Erftstadt represents as a young town, created in 1969 as part of communal reorganization and it consists of 14 communities.
The best-known ones are the Lechenich State Castle and Gracht Palace (birthplace of Carl Schurz, the first German-born Secretary of State of the USA).
Erftstadt became internationally renowned through Gymnich Palace which between 1971 and 1990 served the German Federal Government as its guest house, hosting many VIPs and international heads of state.
Kottenforst-Ville is a nature preserve in North Rhine-Westphalia, situated between Bergheim, Kerpen, Erftstadt, Euskirchen, Königswinter, Bonn, Brühl, Hürth, Frechen and Pulheim.
In the vicinity of Erftstadt, Brühl and Hürth many small and large lakes have been created due to coal mining.
The reforestation of the area was begun in 1920 by planting beech, pine, oak and larch trees.
