It was a long, frustrating journey for Eric Barton from Big Man on Campus to NFL starter, a series of opportunities missed, lost and taken away, waiting for the chance to finally prove his worth as a professional football player.
Barton's confidence was at an all-time high as he headed into the 2002 season firmly entrenched as the starting weakside linebacker, and it quickly showed in his performance on the field.
Barton missed out on a trip to Hawaii despite finishing the regular season with a team-high 124 tackles, six sacks, two interceptions and three forced fumbles, but there was no question that the 25-year old linebacker from Alexandria, Virginia had made a name for himself in the NFL.
