Encyclopedia > Eric Breuer

Eric Breuer, is a Swiss archaeologist and historian. Importance and applicability Archaeology is the study of human nature and attempts to illuminate the question of what it means to be human. ...

He studied archaeology and history at the Universities of Munich, Vienna, Fribourg and Bale. He discovered the Roman vicus of Eriskirch (Lake Constance), and conducted widespread research on early Medieval archaeology, archaeology of Roman provinces, avar archaeology, and Mediterranean history. His main interest was the relative chronology of roman and early medieval times.

The main idea of his book about danubian small findings (Byzanz an der Donau) is, that every discussion about small findings should be a discussion about the economical sites of process of production - and not ethnic conclusions. As a result also chronological horizons get at B.'s work the meaning of starting, increasing, decline and end of fabrications.
