Encyclopedia > Eric McLaren

Dr. Eric McLaren serves as the principal and vice president for Academic Programs at IMSA or the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. A long term resident of Aurora,Illinois where the school is located, McLaren has lived there since 1966. He attended the West Aurora High School North Campus (which is now the IMSA campus.) He began working for IMSA as an RC or Resident Counselor when IMSA first opened. Since then, he has filled the roles of Head Resident Counselor (2 years), Coordinator of Residential Life (5 years), Assistant Principal, Coordinator of Community Learning, and Interim Director of Student Leadership Development. Essentially, McLaren dedicates himself to IMSA to such a degree that all other activities rank second on his priorities. Also, as the principle, McLaren lends a hand in most disciplinary actions in the school. His philosophy is not to punish the student, but to abate the pattern of crimes in his school. In most cases, this means expulsion. McLaren wants what is best for his students, but strictly enforces recent changes to the student hand book's rules with no compromise. He married Kim Vitek in July 1996, and became a parent to two boys. Now an educational facilitator as well as a parent, McLaren does a fine job overseeing the upbringing of his children as his son displays through playing his Game Boy often in his father's office. Some people referred to McLaren as "E-Mac" until 2005, but when he earned his Ph.D it changed to "D-Mac" for Dr. McLaren. Until this past year, he had a habit of not wearing socks with his shoes (which probably comes from him being a swimmer, as well as swimming coach for IMSA years ago.)
