Eric Patrick Nicol CM, BA, MA (born 28 December 1919 in Kingston, Ontario) is a Canadian author and playwright, particularly of humour. Living in Vancouver since 1921, he attended the University of British Columbia where he studied French. In 1941, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the university. The Order of Canada is Canadas highest civilian honour, with membership awarded to those who exemplify the Orders Latin motto Desiderantes meliorem patriam, which means Desiring a better country. ... He was born December 28, 1919 in Kingston, Ontario, the son of William Nicol and Amelia Mannock Nicol.
After the war, Nicol returned to UBC for his M.A. in French Studies ('48) and spent one year in doctoral studies at Sorbonne.
Nicol had started to write occasional columns for the Vancouver News Herald and the Vancouver Province during the war, while studying in Paris.
