Erie Township is a township located in Becker County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,621.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 94.1 km˛ (36.3 mi˛). 83.1 km˛ (32.1 mi˛) of it is land and 11.0 km˛ (4.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 11.72% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,621 people, 596 households, and 463 families residing in the township. The population density is 19.5/km˛ (50.5/mi˛). There are 823 housing units at an average density of 9.9/km˛ (25.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 95.37% White, 0.06% African American, 1.73% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 2.53% from two or more races. 0.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 596 households out of which 36.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.3% are married couples living together, 5.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% are non-families. 18.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.10.


In the township the population is spread out with 29.4% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 104.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.3 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $43,024, and the median income for a family is $45,875. Males have a median income of $31,742 versus $19,167 for females. The per capita income for the township is $18,837. 4.2% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.3% of those under the age of 18 and 3.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The township of Erie was named by settlers from Buffalo, Erie County, New York, in honor of that same county of Erie.
Erie is, or rather was, a heavily timbered township.
Erie corners on the southwest near the Northern Pacific Railroad, on the northeast not far from the beautiful Height of Land Lake, is joined on the north by Homesville and two miles from Rock Lake, and on the south by Burlington; the Otter Tail River leaving the town in Section 36.
