2003 November 3 - EUs Liikanen Says Enlargement Fuels Optimism in Europe (259 words) |
 | According to Erkki Liikanen, the European Unions Enterprise Commissioner, prospects for economic growth in the EU are bright, not just because of solid third-quarter GDP figures but because the imminent entry of ten new member states has rekindled something of the optimism that greeted the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. |
 | Liikanen noted a Commission study released just days before that tracked candidate countries progress toward implementation of both the terms of enlargement and specific EU legislation. He said the tremendous economic and technological potential of the new members spurred a sense of optimism about growth prospects in the soon-to-be 25-member Union. |
 | Liikanen said the Commissions newly-adopted procedures for soliciting public comment had improved the proposal, and that the process had reminded many in the EU of the importance of the chemicals industry in Europe. |
