Ernest Henri Besnier (April 21, 1831 - May 15, 1909) was a French dermatologist and medicinal director of the Hôpital St. Louis in Paris. He introduced the histopathology and the parasitology to the clinic and invented the biopsy. He was the first to describe the chronic skin change Sarcoidosis and gave it the name lupus pernio. He founded the medical journal Annales de dermatologie et de syphiligraphie along with Pierre Adolphe Adrien Doyon. Besnier is credited with performing comparative studies between the French and Viennese approaches to dermatological medicine, and in 1881 with Doyon, he translated Moritz Kaposi's famous book on skin diseases from German into French (Leçons sur les maladies de la peau). Ernest Henri Besnier was born in Honfleur, Calvados, the son of a French custom official who moved from Givet to Marseille and then to Orléans.
Besnier became médecin des hôpitaux in 1863 and subsequently held positions at several Paris hospitals; in 1873 he succeeded Bazin as dermatologist at the Hôpital St. Louis, of which he became director the same year.
Besnier was nominated for a chair at the Collège de Medecin, but a sudden change in the ministry resulted in it being unsuccessful.
