Encyclopedia > Ernest W. Brown

Ernest William Brown (November 29, 1866July 22, 1938) was a British astronomer.


He studied the theory of the Moon's motion and compiled extremely accurate lunar tables. He also calculated the orbits of Trojan asteroids.


He won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1907, the Bruce Medal in 1920 and the James Craig Watson Medal in 1936.


A crater on the Moon is named after him, as is the asteroid 1643 Brown.

Brown was made a fellow of Christ's College in 1889, and received his Masters degree in 1891.
In 1907, Brown was appointed Professor of Mathematics at Yale University.
Brown's Tables were adopted by nearly all of the national ephemerides in 1923 for their calculations of the Moon's position, and continued to be used for most of the remainder of the 20th century.

Brown is a lunar impact crater that is located in the southeast part of the Moon, to the southwest of the prominent Tycho crater.
Northwest of Brown crater is the Wilhelm crater, and to the west is Montanari crater.
The rim of Brown crater is mis-shapen from a typical circular formation, most notably due to the intrusion of the satellite crater 'Brown E' into the southeast of the formation.
