Barnes acknowledges that at the time he had not yet acquired a "point of view" necessary to fuel his career.
In 1984, Barnes was selected out of a field of world-renowned painters as the official sports artist for the Los Angeles Olympic Summer Games for which he created a series of five pieces representing the agony and ecstasy of the competitors, which were reproduced as Olympic posters.
Representing what Barnes felt was a moral responsibility to use his art as a visual map to trace the enormity of the tragedy of September 11, 2001, and to rally humanity to deal with events which defy understanding, this significant piece was also unveiled at the Seattle Art Museum last fall at a private reception.

By his senior year Barnes was captain of the football team and state champion in the shotput.
Upon graduation, Barnes signed a pro football contract with the Baltimore Colts, and painted his first major work, β€œThe Bench.” He carried the piece with him to training camp, where he was pleased with the reactions of the coaches.
Barnes' first exhibition was at a team party for the Denver Broncos.
